Engagement Photos at the Middlesex County Court House

Short answer: the Middlesex County Court House at 399 Ridout Street North in downtown London, Ontario is one of the city's most distinctive engagement backdrops — a castle-like Gothic Revival building from 1829. Shoot it in soft late-afternoon light, and use the ivy, the tower and the entrance for three very different looks.

What is the Middlesex County Court House?

Built in 1829 and designed by architect John Ewart of York, the court house is a National Historic Site of Canada. It is an early example of Gothic Revival architecture, and it was modelled on Malahide Castle near Dublin, the ancestral home of Colonel Thomas Talbot, founder of the Talbot Settlement. Today it still looks, unmistakably, like a castle on a downtown street.

Where should you stand?

The entrance

The ivy-framed entrance suits a formal, centred portrait where you and your partner stand side by side. It photographs best on an overcast day or in open shade.

With the tower behind you

Closer, more intimate frames with the tower rising behind you tell the 'castle' story without needing a wide shot, and they work in tighter spaces when other visitors are around.

On the grounds

Movement works well here. A veil, a long coat or a flowing dress picks up the architecture's drama as you walk the grounds.

When is the best time to go?

  • Late afternoon, when the light is softer and the stone looks warm.
  • Weekday mornings are quietest for downtown.
  • Early fall and late spring bring greenery or colour against the stone; ivy is at its richest in summer and turns red in autumn.

Practical tips

  • It is a downtown landmark, so expect passers-by — shoot in quieter windows and stay flexible.
  • Check current access and any rules for photography with the County of Middlesex before your session.
  • Pair it with a second, softer location — a park along the Thames — for variety.
  • Wear something that holds its shape against heavy stone: deep colours, long lines and texture.
